The Rise and Fall Of the Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was perhaps the most powerful empires that existed in the history of Europe. We shall look at how the Roman Empire was set up and what resulted in its downfall. The birth of this empire is credited to the twins Romulus and Remus. According to mythology they were reared by a she wolf.
If we look back at the history of Rome it would be difficult for us to imagine a small city state like Rome having grown as a powerful empire. This small Latin state like its Greek counterparts was one ridden by battles and this led to fragmentation. It is a wonder that a community heavily reliant on farming and agriculture and constantly at war became the axis around which a whole powerful empire existed.
What made them stand apart was that Rome unlike the Greek was able to subjugate the other states and bring them all under the umbrella of Rome heralding the rise of the all powerful Roman empire as early as 4th century B.C.
Most people are not clear how an agricultural tribe became a warring tribe with the sole intention of expansion. Some put it down to the constant wars that existed there and hence the total mistrust between people. Others say that the senate had a great say and their political ambitions laid the base for a strong Roman empire.
Whatever is the reason the Roman Empire had stood tall by the 3rd century. Having conquered Italy they set sights on their neighbouring countries and succeeded in capturing many parts. The Roman Empire had been established.
After nearly 500 years of complete power the great empire met its Waterloo by476A.D.
We shall now look into some of the reasons for the downfall of this great empire. Though various historians have given multifarious reasons for the collapse some agreed reasons are discussed below.
The first and possibly the most logical of them was that they suffered defeats at the hands of the other tribes.
The next reason given was their over dependence on slaves to do their work. The supply of labour stopped as the empire suffered defeats. There were severe financial deficits and over taxation and all this crippled the working of the government.
The next reason given is the division of the Empire into two halves for easy governance but over time there was no cohesion between the two and slowly they drifted apart making them easy prey for outside invaders.
Political instability, extravagant spending etc were also causes for the downfall of the empire.
Last but not the least the spread of Christianity also took its toll on the Empire.
In conclusion it may be said that though the Roman empire had a great fall the era is etched in the annals of history. #theopenbook #Education #Educationalvideos #Studyiq #learn #Cbse #icse #ssc #generalknowledge
