Growing corn with no (low) input costs.  This is how cover crops lowered my farms risk profile while regenerating soil health and supplying more than adequate fertility at the same time.  How often do we get a chance to do the right thing and get the gold?  Finally Finding the right winter legume, that not only over winters, adds adequate fertility, regenerates soil health and on top of all that neutralizes weed pressure enough to negate the need for costly weed killing herbicide applications, essentially creating a very cutting edge regenerative and organic farming system that could be used widely.  This is a educational test plot based on my previous experiences with Austrian Winter peas and many other covers crop blends and it revealed a lot of knowledge for the future of farming.  We drilled the Austrian Winter pea the previous fall in early October of 2019, then planted corn directly into the standing Austrian winter peas in late April of 2020 as a test plot. (both video links below show the progress) Absolutely no commercial fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides were applied to the test plot during the 2020 growing season, or the previous fall of 2019. The ear of corn on the thumbnail for this video is from this test plot.  It is truly, NON GMO, organically produced and uses the most cutting edge regenerative farming system we have developed to date.  This is the result.

CHECK OUT THE LINKS BELOW to see the progression of this particular test plot.  Stay tuned for yield results and ROI information vs. the high input conventional production practices used to grow corn right next to this real regenerative, organic, soil health test plot.  Same Variety, same field, side be side using 2 totally different production practices!  we did not apply fungicides to the conventional field for the best representative data we could gather.  It is also worth noting that this is not certified organic, but it technically could be.

Regenerative farming field update. - WATCH VIDEO -the same regenerative plot right after planting/ emergence early May 2020

Regenerative AG Cover Crops 101.   -  WATCH VIDEO- the same regenerative plot in February of 2020, showing the Austrian winter pea to be the hardiest overwintering legume.  The Austrian winter pea was green and growing in February in Southeast Nebraska after months of freezing temperatures.  Toward the end of this video i mention potentially supplementing some commercial fertilizer, for research purposes and because the Austrian winter peas proved to add so much natural legume nitrogen I wanted to see the results.  Absolutely no commercial nitrogen was supplemented.
