In this video I talk to you about the pronunciation of the letter "R" in Spanish. I go over why it is difficult to pronounce this letter, which are the two phonemes that present this letter, when one or the other is pronounced, which parts of the mouth are involved and which is the position that these parts must adopt for the correct production. In addition, I also tell you those words that, depending on whether they are written with an "R" or a double "R", will vary in meaning. During the video, I make samples so that you can listen and practice the two phonemes.

The difficulty of pronouncing the letter R is mainly due to two aspects:
Firstly, the fact that in the student's mother tongue the letter R phoneme does not exist.
On the other hand, that in the student's mother tongue this phoneme does exist, but its mode and point of articulation are different from Spanish.
If we add to this that the phoneme of the letter "R" in Spanish presents two different sounds, the difficulty increases, since the student has to be able to distinguish and produce both sounds.
The letter "R" in Spanish has two different sounds or phonemes:
- Simple or soft /r/ (simple alveolar vibrant): the phoneme ere.
- Multiple or strong /rr/ (multiple alveolar vibrant): the phoneme erre.

To pronounce both sounds we will use the tip of the tongue and the alveolar part of the palate (just behind the upper incisors). Their position is the same, we will place only the tip of the tongue slightly over the alveolar part of the palate (just behind the upper incisors).
The difference between these phonemes lies in the number of vibrations we make when we want to pronounce one sound or another.

- Simple phoneme /r/ = one touch (one vibration)
- Multiple phoneme /rr/= more than one touch (more than one vibration)

Normally, we pronounce the simple phoneme /r/ when we write a single "R" and this is not the beginning of the word (intervocalic, end of word, end of syllable, behind consonant when this is part of the same syllable).
However, we pronounce the multiple phoneme /rr/ when there is a double "R" written. Also when we write a single R at the beginning of the word or when the consonants N, L, S + R appear before a single R.

Finally, we must pay special attention to those words that will change their meaning depending on whether they have a single "R" or double "R" in their spelling. These cases will only occur when the R is in the intervocalic position.
