Abusing cough medicine common among teens

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Something that is likely in many peoples medicine cabinets could be used by teens to get high.DXM, or dextromethorphan, is an ingredient found in many cold medicines available without a prescription. Teens take handfuls of pills or bottles of cough syrup to get a high that often results in hallucinations.    A study found one in 10 teenagers has abused it making it more popular with teens than cocaine, LSD and meth. DXM can be addictive, and destroy lives.One teen said, It's kind of like an outer body experience. You feel lightweight hard to walk. If you do this drug for a one time high it can affect you for the rest of your life and I'm proof of that.High amounts of DXM can be fatal, especially when taken along with other medicines or illegal drugs.    Doctors said parents need to pay attention to what's in their medicine cabinet.
