DPF regeneration in city driving - Volvo V70 D3 2012 Geartronic 📱 Car Scanner ELM OBD2 - iOS Android

Normal DPF regen while driving (Volvo D3 5cyl 2012) will start only when:
- coolant is over 68-70°C
- DPF soot reached a certaing threshold: 25.30 g in my engine (different in each engine)
- no engine error codes
- no "low fuel" warning

In Volvo diesels normal DPF regeneration - while driving - starts when amount of soot in the DPF filter exceeds certain threshold, approx. 18g - 25g - 28g (depending on engine). Once observed, It will always start at exactly the same threshold in your car.

DPF regen will not start at lower soot level even if you drive very fast on highway, or keep engine at higher rpm in lower gear. Simply driving on highway will not empty your DPF filter. However on highway soot will accumulate at much lower rate, remains stable or may even slowly decrease (1-2g per each 100 km, depending on engine): Passive DPF regen - Volvo

4cyl VEA engines have lower 18 gram threshold, and better passive regen at moderate speed. Additionally Volvo VEA 4-cylinder engines initiate the DPF regen every 1200 km, even if 18g soot threshold was not reached. Every 5 minute VEA engine will also empty the NOx trap, which takes 15-20 seconds (observe the O2S1 lambda value)

Car Scanner cannot initiate "forced" service regeneration of DPF filter in Volvo.

Symptoms of DPF regeneration in 5-cylinder Volvo diesel engines (D3, D4, D5):
- the DPF filter and catalytic converter temperatures rise significantly (up to 500-600°C)
- EGR valve is closed at 4%
- throttle is almost closed at 20-30% (instead of usual 89-90%)
- glow plugs are activated at 30-40% (under hard acceleration switch off to 0%)
- "Calculated boost" goes negative to -0.4 bar at idle (instead of 0 bar) - it is calculated from MAP+IAT values, MAF or absolut load value.
- radiator fan runs loudly when idling or driving slowly (67%)
- fuel rail pressure at idle increases to 44-45k kPa (instead of usual 36-37k kPa)
- lambda at idle drops to 1.4-1.7 (instead of usual 2 at idle) /lambda is 02S1 fuel:air, oxygen sensor wide range equivalence ratio/
- calculated engine load is 60-70% (instead of usual 30-40%)
- MAF drops to 6-7 g/sec (instead of usual 10 g/sec)
- air mass desired is cca. 220 mg/str. (instead of usual 320 mg/str)
- start/stop is NOT available
- fuel consumption rises by 2-3 l/100 km
- fuel consumption never drops to 0.0 under engine braking

Above sensors are visible in most diesel engines even if Car Scanner doesn't show DPF soot.

Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app shows DPF soot in gram or % in all Volvo cars (except 1.6D and 2.0D in V50-S40):
- 5-cylinder D3-D5 diesel, profile Volvo P3 2008+ (XC60, V60, V70, S80, but also V50-S40 D3)
- 4-cylinder VEA diesel in P3 platform, profile Volvo 2014+ VEA (not SPA)
- 4-cylinder VEA diesel in Volvo SPA cars (%PF particle filter), profile Volvo EOBD or 2014+VEA
- D2 engine (1.6)
- 2.0D diesel V70-S80, profile Volvo V70-S80 2.0D
- 5-cylinder D5 diesel S60-V70-S80 from 2001-2009, profile Volvo P2 29-bit
- 5-cylinder D5 diesel XC90 from 2002-2015, profile Volvo P2 29-bit

Without this app you need to observe:
- momentary fuel consumption
- fuel consumption with engine braking
- Start/Stop function (when NOT available and you see text "emissions control")
- noisy radiator fan
these symptoms occuring together indicate that DPF regeneration is on
