Understand how the GOAT’s routine was scored, complete with her famous double-double dismount! Simone Biles hit her beam routine at Night 1 of the US Olympic Trials, and despite an early wobble on a wolf turn that impacted her execution score, managed to crack 15 points. Biles earned a 15.133 in competition from the judges, including a massive 6.8 difficulty score (or D score) which included the H valuation from her signature double-double, the Biles. Simone’s 15.133 was the highest beam score of the night and one of the highest scores of the competition.

Right now, questions are obviously circulating about who will be on the Olympic Team for the United States, and Simone’s performance tonight put her into first place — the top two will earn an automatic bid. Otherwise, the only gymnast confirmed to Tokyo is Jade Carey, who earned a spot at the World Cup series. Sunisa “Suni” Lee and Jordan Chiles placed second and third respectively, and if they can replicate their Night 1 performances on Night 2 it seems like they’ll also be Tokyo-bound! That fourth spot and the specialist spot are still in the air — Grace McCallum, MyKayla Skinner, and Kayla DiCello all showed strong performances tonight, while Leanne Wong will need to prove herself tomorrow if she wants to earn that fourth spot.

If you're a new gym fan or a returning four year fan, I'd really appreciate it if you subscribed! I will be publishing more videos from Trials and other competitions on the road to Tokyo 2021. If you have any questions about the scoring or why some things happen the way they do, please feel free to ask in the comments! I'm happy to help :)

Sorry to the Rebeca Andrade fans — I started editing a video of her Pan American Games performance, but the videos got wrecked by copyright :// I will try to figure out a way to upload after US Trials finish.

Actual score: 15.133 = 6.8 + 8.333 (average of multiple judges)
- Note that domestic scores are usually a bit higher than international scores! That doesn't take away from the accomplishments of the gymnast.

I’m not an expert judge, and if you have an alternate perspective or a question, I would encourage you strongly to let me know in the comments! Judging is always subjective; judging in real time differs from judging on video. The purpose of this video is not to malign or diminish Simone, but rather to highlight her accomplishments and explain why she earned the score that she did.

If you enjoyed, please like, share, and subscribe! It helps me out a ton :)

Footage does not belong to me. Video belongs to NBC from the 2021 American Artistic Gymnastics Olympic Trials, Night 1, in St. Louis, Missouri. This video qualifies as fair use (educational, informative, transformative use).
