The French have an easy way to ask how you’re doing: “Ça va ?” It literally means, “It’s going?”, and the standard reply might surprise you.

When one meets up with a friend, acquaintance, or family member in France, you’ll often here “Ça va ?” The usual response is exactly the same: “Ça va.” Does the meaning change? Not at all. It just goes from being a question to being a statement: “It’s going.”

Of course, you can answer the question any way you like. You might say “très bien” (very well), “oui” (yes, [it’s going]), or “et toi? ([well] and you?). And if you’re in a particularly bad mood and want to sound as much like a native French speaker as possible, you can gently put your top teeth to your lower lip and make an exasperated “pfff” sound. How are you in that moment? Very annoyed and very French.

In this video, you’ll see how to use ça va, très bien, oui, and et toi.
