Donkey Kong (ド ン キ ー コ ン グ Donkī Kongu)

It is an arcade game created by Nintendo in 1981. It is a primitive platform game that focuses on controlling the character on a series of platforms while avoiding obstacles. The story is not very complex, but it worked at that time. The game consists of Mario (in the game, Jumpman) must rescue a lady who had been captured by a huge monkey named Donkey Kong. These two characters became one of the most famous of Nintendo.

This game was the latest effort by the Japanese company to successfully penetrate the North American market. Hiroshi Yamauchi, the president of Nintendo, assigned the design of the game to Shigeru Miyamoto. Drawing on multiple inspirations, including Popeye and King Kong, Miyamoto created the sets and designed the game together with Nintendo's chief systems officer, Gunpei Yokoi. These two men created new graphics using characterization techniques, including scenes between levels to advance the story of the game, thus integrating it into the game.

Despite doubts that arose from Nintendo members in America, Donkey Kong was a huge hit in North America and Japan. Nintendo authorized Coleco to make the home versions on various platforms. Other companies limited themselves to making games with the same scheme to avoid paying Nintendo for their idea.

The characters created by Miyamoto appeared in multiple places, such as cereal boxes and cartoons. Universal City Studios sued Nintendo claiming that Donkey Kong infringed King Kong's copyright, but such a lawsuit was unsuccessful.

The success of this game put Nintendo in a prime position to dominate the video game market during the 1980s and early 1990s.
