The scene is the fundamental building block of a novel.
All the best bits of the story take place in what we call scenes.
This is where you ‘show don’t tell’, the place where your hero and villain confront each other, the place where dialogue unfolds and, no matter whether you are a 'plotter' or a 'pantser', the scene is where you show off your tricks.
But what actually is a scene?
In this video we present a simple definition and then give a formula for constructing scenes in such a way that you can create that most sought-after of objects, a page-turner.
