Since 1994 a network has been growing, working with rural communities. The first project started in Mexico, but the network Plan Vivo spread across the world. The communities are at the very heart, working on a projects to restore ecosystems and reduce greenhouse gas emissions on their own land.

"Inspirational aspect of this project, for me, are the communities and the people. These are exceptionally well organized communities."

Each community or smallholder creates their own sustainable land management plan called the Plan Vivo, which means living plan. These are developed in line with the Plan Vivo standard, which itself is governed and developed with input from a wide range of stakeholders. Projects are all coordinated by local organizations. They are registered and independently certified by the Plan Vivo foundation.
By planting native trees, reducing deforestation and making improvements to agriculture, the community secures new resources for themselves, but they also create climate services and ecosystem benefits that they can trade through Plan Vivo. There is an inspiring diversity of people in projects ranging from wood lots in Mexico, to restoration of the great Himalayan forest in Nepal.
Locally Plan Vivo is about improving people's livelihoods and tackling poverty. Regionally it's about biodiversity and restoring ecosystems that provide us all with vital resources, and globally it's about climate change and a ways of reducing carbon.

"It would conserve a very important ecosystem and also we will benefit from improving the livelihoods of really vulnerable communities."

Just like farmers get paid when they deliver coffee or rice, Plan Vivo creates ongoing performance-based payments for climate services by issuing certificates to the projects. Each Plan Vivo certificate represents one ton of carbon dioxide, which can be issued into the market environmental registry, providing buyers with an easy and credible method for tracking their purchases.

"So if your company and you want to send a message, which is about climate change and your ethical stance. Then investing in these communities, where you are building their capacity, building their resilience, can only be good for your product."

Plan Vivo works with over 10,000 smallholders, across 15 countries in three continents; in Africa, Latin America and Asia. By buying credits, businesses, organizations and individuals can compensate for their carbon emissions and at the same time benefit and empower communities at the front-line of climate change.

It goes way beyond carbon. To invest in this inspiring and growing network, visit PlanVivo.org or why not just give them a ring.
