On Friday 5th July 2019, I had a day off from work, so I decided to embark on a short train journey from Mumbai to Lonavala.  The train I wanted to travel on was the Mumbai - Pune Intercity Express.  The reason for this is because the Intercity Express is being tested out with the Push - Pull technique, where they have one locomotive at the front and one at the back.  This helps in quicker acceleration and braking, and thus saves time.  So I wanted to experience a journey on that train.

Since it was a last minute plan, I did not have reservations.  I reached Mumbai CST at about 06:15 am and bought a general unreserved ticket.  The train was already on the platform (8).  Both the locomotives were Ajni WAP-7s (30267 at the front and 30265 at the rear).  I went to the unreserved coach at the front and luckily found an emergency window seat.  The emergency window does not have grills so it becomes much easier to take photos and videos.  At 06:50 am sharp, we rolled out of Mumbai CST.

The power of the 2 locomotives in the push and pull configuration was felt immediately.  Rapid acceleration once we came on the mainline and we made a quick entry into Dadar at 07:01 am.  Few minutes later, we just took off from Dadar and accelerated amazingly.  Stations were passed at full speed.  At 07:23 am we came to a halt at Thane, where we were held up for a few minutes since the Mumbai LTT - Gorakhpur Kashi Express was made to go ahead of us.  As a result we were trailing it all the way to Kalyan, and you can also see the Kashi Express ahead of us as we curve and enter the Parsik Tunnel.

Kalyan was passed slowly at 07:45 am.  Once on the mainline again, we unleashed full power and raced down the line to Karjat.  In the curves you can see the reflection of our own train in the windows.  Also enjoy the beautiful scenery.  At Karjat we were not supposed to stop, but we halted for a few seconds at 08:20 am.  A major delay happened just before Palasdhari as we stopped for 20 minutes there.  Few days before my journey, a goods train had derailed on the ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala, hence all the 3 tracks on the ghat were not operational.  When we finally started moving, we were switched onto the middle line to climb up the ghat.

The ghat itself was very beautiful and you can see the green mountains as we wind our way around them and through the numerous tunnels as well, with waterfalls coming down.  We slow down as we pass the accident site at Jambrung and you can hear a lot of honking as there are people working on the tracks.  At Monkeyhill we are switched back to the first line.  As we approach Khandala and Lonavala, it starts raining heavily.  I get down at Lonavala and you can see the loco pilots buying a cup of tea from a vendor before departing.  The acceleration from Lonavala was quite relaxed, not the full potential.  Nevertheless it was a nice moment.

Hope you enjoyed the journey as much as I did!
