Do a series of light
Do a series of light experiments using a fish tank, laser torch and various mirrors and lenses. In these experiments you can actually see the path of light -- the way rays reflect, converge or diverge. It will give you feel for what "lenses" and "mirrors" do when light rays pass through them.
