If you have multiple Synology's or even just multiple NAS units within your network you can mount a SMB/NFS shared folder onto the Synology. Once you have mounted a shared folder you can transfer files to and from the external server from within DSM. This makes the process of managing files across your environment incredibly easy!

For me I use this all the time because I have a R630 FreeNAS SSD build that I use for video editing and any applications which require high IOPs. By mounting this FreeNAS shared folder from within DSM I can easily transfer files between them. Then the transfers are all handled by DSM, meaning I can log off my computer and the transfer will still take place.
