On June 20, 1999, as the last of 40,000 Yugoslav troops left Kosovo, NATO declared a formal end to its bombing campaign against Yugoslavia. NATO's liberation of Kosovo took place smoothly on Sunday - as the remaining stragglers from the Yugoslav Army left the province ahead of the midnight deadline for withdrawal. Packed into armored vehicles, tanks and buses, most of the Serb forces and special police had streamed out of the shattered region by late Saturday night. Serb civilians fearing reprisals fled along with them. British Army forces escorted a large convoy of Yugoslav Army trucks and vehicles out of Kosovo. However, it appears the Serb forces are now negotiating with British Troops supervising the withdrawal to go back into Kosovo and retrieve some hardware left behind.
