Former prime minister Paul Keating’s views on China should be “rigorously scrutinised” by journalists, according to Digital Editor Jack Houghton.

Mr Keating addressed the National Press Club this week and gave a scathing assessment of Australia’s handling of the relationship with China.

Mr Houghton noted the former minister also made “extremely flawed suggestions” about Taiwan and whether it was part of China.

“The Australian’s foreign editor Greg Sheridan delivered a brilliant rebuttal to that notion,” he said.

Speaking on Sky News Australia, Mr Sheridan said Keating’s comments were an “ugly, nasty, narrow, and quite vicious prism through which to view this”.

“What Keating is saying is it doesn’t matter if the Chinese invade and brutally subject Taiwan. If we take the view that the fate of a good democracy in Asia of 25 million people is of no concern to us, why should other people take the view that the fate of our democracy of 25 million people ... is of some concern to them? His comments on Taiwan were quite disgraceful,” Mr Sheridan said.

According to Mr Houghton, overall the reception of Mr Keating’s address was “friendly”.

“No questions about cyber attacks in Australia from China, infiltration of institutions, or compromise of Labor politicians,” Mr Houghton said.

“No pointing out to him that China had laid a debt diplomacy trap for Pacific countries, our allies and neighbours. Pretty important stuff.”
