Disclaimer I am trait level 1000, so I do have the DLC traits active. While this will cause me to do more damage and be more efficient, these are still the most optimal ways to build without the DLC and are still extremely powerful.

Build 1:
Void set
Hive cannon
Shotgun - breath of the desert
Scar of the jungle god
Galenic charm
Burden of the follower
Burden of the gambler

The no DLC version of my powerful desert mage build. Void gives us a 25% increase to all damage, so this is the perfect set for mod build when you don't have the DLC. Follower charges are mod super fast. The trick here is to use breath then immediately fire the shotgun. This bypasses the fire rate nerf from follower while simultaneously charging another breath to endlessly spam. Breath can crit so gambler gives it the biggest damage buff. Use the claws to keep charging your mods via melee DOT's since void does not have the refund like labyrinth set does.

Build 2:
Same as the first build except Particle accelerator over the shotgun

PA is the ultimate cheese weapon. It does huge damage and works well with gambler since it can crit. Not all bosses can be sucked into the grav core so be aware of that. For those bosses, you will have to lead and predict your shots. Once they are sucked in the grav core, use hive cannon to corrode and immediately begin shooting PA to charge it up again. Rinse and repeat.

Build 3:
Same as the first build except eye of the storm instead of shotgun

Same principles still apply. Eye of the storm is great since it charges so fast. Use the mod as the primer and the standard fire as your detonator. Be sure to use the static shot on groups of enemies. When multiple enemies are overloaded, it will create a chain explosion for insane damage.

Build 4:
Void set
spitfire
Ricochet rifle - swarm
Butcher's flail
Galenic charm
Burden of the gambler
Spirit stone

This is a great all around build for close quarters combat and crowd control. Spitfire will be your main damage dealer. It charges fast and does sweet damage. Ricochet rifle and swarm are excellent for crowd control. Gambler will increase all of our damage and spirit stone slightly increase our damage and mod gen. I went with spirit stone over follower for this build because the fire rate nerf hurts the spitfire too much. Remember to use the flail to corrode your enemies.

Build 5:
Void set
Magnum - swarm
Shotgun - breath of the desert
Butcher's flail
Burden of the follower
Burden of the gambler

The ultimate siege and dungeon clearing build. Very similar to the 1st build but instead we are using swarm and are using flail to apply corrosion instead of hive cannon. This is more optimal for siege's and dungeons due to corrosion not being a necessity as it is for boss fights. Flail is there in case you need to corrode a big enemy. Swapping back and fourth as you fire the shotgun and magnum bypasses the fire rate nerf from follower. A neat trick that keeps our DPS going while simultaneously charges our mods. Use the swarm when things get hectic or when a big enemy comes. Breath/shotgun combo is your main squeeze for this build. Use it generously as it charges fast. Spam away!
