Today's video gives you a quick overview of the different levels of courts that are available in the state of New York.

This applies to civil cases including medical malpractice matters, car accidents, accident cases and even wrongful death matters.

The trial level court in New York is called the "Supreme Court of the State of New York."

The state courts handle trials involving civil litigation of injured victims who are seeking compensation for the harms and losses they suffered because of someone else's carelessness.

What happens if you go to trial and lose?
What is the next higher court you can appeal to?

In New York, that is known as the Appellate Division of the State of New York. There are four different Appellate Divisions that accept cases from all across New York state.

The first apartment accepts cases from Manhattan and the Bronx.

The second Department accepts cases from Nassau County, Suffolk County, Rockland County and Staten Island.

What happens though if you still are not satisfied with the results you have achieved from the Appellate Division?

The next highest court you can possibly go to in this state is known as the "Court of Appeals." This is our highest court here in New York.

You should also know that if you lose your trial in the Supreme Court, you have a legal right to have your case appealed at the Appellate Division. That is known as an "Appeal as of right."

What happens if you lose at the Appellate Division as well?
Can you automatically go to the Court of Appeals?
The answer is no.
