This incredible drone footage was filmed near Point Defiance, Wash. on Jan. 1, 2024. The juvenile humpback in the video is CRC-20899, according to David Cope, who took the video.

Humpback whales can grow to weigh 40 tons and reach lengths of 60 feet, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Before a final moratorium on commercial whaling in 1985, all populations of humpback whales were greatly reduced, most by more than 95 percent, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"Abundance of this species along the U.S. west coast, including Washington, has steadily grown in recent decades," the WDFW wrote on its website. "Humpback whales in the North Pacific remain vulnerable to a number of threats, including entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris, ship strikes, human-generated marine sound, and the effects of climate change."

Humpback whales live in all oceans across Earth, NOAA said, and travel great distances every year marking one of the longest migrations of any mammal on the planet.
