Once, Lord Vishnu was having a nap on the serpent king Sheshanaga. Goddess Lakshmi was serving him. It so happened that Lord Brahma came to see him.

Soon after his arrival, he got angry with Lord Vishnu as the latter did not get up to salute him. He argued with Lord Vishnu and said that He was the creator of the world, so how dare he didn't salute him? However, Lord Vishnu told Brahma that the whole universe resides within him. He told Brahma that even he had emerged seated in the lotus from his navel. So, Brahma was sort of like his son. They continued to argue with each other, and finally, they were ready to fight. Lord Brahma sat on his Swan, Lord Vishnu on his Garuda, and they started fighting with each other.

It was a terrible fight as both were showering deadly weapons on each other. All the Devas witnessed this awful fight and decided to approach Lord Shiva to end this unfortunate war between Brahma and Vishnu. So, they went to Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. There they saw Lord Shiva sitting in the company of Goddess Parvati. All the Devas bowed down before the couple. Before the Devas could start saying something, Lord Shiva told the Devas that he already knew about the fight between Brahma and Vishnu. Lord Shiva reached the battlefield where that dreadful war was going on. He assumed the form of an enormous column fire and stood between them. This column of fire had neither a beginning nor any end. Brahma and Vishnu heard a heavenly voice saying, 'He who finds out the beginning or the end of this fire column will be known as the supreme god'. So, Brahma and Vishnu decided to prove their dominion by finding the beginning and end of that column fire.

Lord Vishnu attained the form of a Boar and headed downwards to find the beginning of the column of fire. On the other hand, Lord Brahma assumed the form of a Swan and headed upwards in search of the end of the column of fire.

Lord Vishnu, unsuccessful in his quest to find the root of the column fire, returned to the battleground. However, Brahma went on flying to prove his supremacy. Lord Shiva laughed watching this struggle of Brahma, and that's when the Ketaki flower fell from Brahma's head. Brahma then asked Ketaki to back him up on his lie to Lord Vishnu that he had found the end of the fire column.

Brahma went down and told Vishnu that he had found the beginning of the column of fire. Ketaki backed him up. Lord Vishnu then bowed before Brahma and said to him, "Oh! Brahma, you are greater than me."

Watching this made Lord Shiva turn red with anger. He came to his true form and scolded Brahma for lying, as there was no end or beginning to his column fire. Lord Shiva opened his third eye, and a ferocious being came to be known as Kala Bhairava emerged from it. He chopped one of Brahma's five heads, making him Chaturmuka from Panchamukha.

Afterwards, Lord Shiva told Brahma that no one would worship him as he had lied before Vishnu. Lord Shiva told Vishnu that as he had followed the path of truth, he would be worshipped as "Satya Narayan," and his devotees would perform Satya Narayan Puja on Poornima.

So, In this video, we learned how Lord Brahma lost one of his heads to lord Shiva.
