Learn English with Mr Duncan - LESSON 4 - English Grammar Guide (2024)
(Yes, that Mr Duncan!)

The English language is a collection of words

that must be used in a certain way,

just like any other language,

English words follow rules that must always be observed and followed.

The general term for these rules is 'grammar'.

Grammar rules are there to give order to a language.

The grammar of a language relates to the way in which words must be used

and how each group of words
function or work.

In English, the types of words are divided into groups

that define their simple use.

These groups are - nouns,
verbs,
adjectives,
adverbs

as well as conjunctions with their own system
of types
and uses.

First of all, we have nouns.

A noun is a naming word.

It names something.

It is what the thing is called.

The name of something is a noun.

Basic nouns are things such as...

Apple.
Tree.
Cloud.
Bird.
Horse.

A name given to a person is a noun.

It is a person's name.

My name is Duncan.

Then there are verbs.

A verb is a doing word.

It describes an action.

Something being done will involve the use of a verb.

Verbs include... Walk.
Climb.
Jump.

Sing.
Throw.
Sit.
Eat.

Next, we have adjectives.

An adjective describes the appearance of something.

How something looks.

What something appears like,
or as.

The features of something being described

will use adjectives to describe them.

Adjectives include...

Fat.
Thin.
Tall.
Young.
Old.
Light.
Dark.

The colour of something is described using adjectives.

A red car.
A blue ball.
A white hat.

Then there are adverbs...

which describe how something is being done.

The type of action and what it relates to
is an adverb.

Happily.
Sadly. Merrily. wrongly.
Rightly.
Angrily.
Peacefully.

We also have prepositions

which are used to show the position of something;

where one thing is; the position, the place.

Where one thing is compared to other things around it.

Under.
Over.
Behind.
On.
Between...

...are all prepositions.

These are the main types of grammar

that are used in English.

Nouns - naming.   Verbs - doing.

Adjectives - appearance.

Adverbs - appearance and action.

Prepositions - place and position.

Remember, do not be afraid of English grammar.

It is just another part of learning the language.
