Antibodies are essential life science tools for therapeutics, basic research and diagnostic tests. However, mono- and polyclonal antibodies are often poorly characterized in terms of specificity and cross-reactivity, as summarized in the recent Nature Feature Reproducibility crisis: Blame it on the antibodies. The Human Protein Atlas consortium from Sweden showed that less than 50% of commercially available antibodies can be effectively used for immunohistochemical tests, which underlines the urgent need for antibody validation and cross-reactivity testing.
