CALLEVA ATREBATUM, Roman Silchester, Part I - A Road to Calleva.

Modern day Silchester and Winchester are two very different places in the 21st Century. In the 1st century BC, they were already bustling communities but the arrival of the Romans accelerated Calleva (Silchester) to a new level of importance. With their expertise for road building the two settlements were soon linked. In this first part, I journey along the route of Roman Road number 42a to discover what's left as I make my way to the abandoned Iron age and Roman city of Calleva Atrebatum.
