Welcome back remodelites to another episode of quick tip Tuesday, where I dive into your questions, comments and concerns. I'm Dave with Remodel Media and since 2005 I've helped people put together kitchens, baths, outdoor kitchens and various other home renovation products. I'm on a mission to eliminate remodel regret and I do that by bringing you the latest tips tricks and products for your home remodel so if you're new here follow along we'll have some fun.

Coming in at number three is the Zephyr Typhoon series. Zephyr is a company based in Northern California that specializes in ventilation. The Typhoon is super quiet and in municipalities that don't require make up air you can get up to 850 CFM. (that's cubic feet per minute for those not familiar - a measurement of how much air a vent hood can move. Anything over 600 is considered pretty good). What makes this hood so special is it's grease capture system. All the grease these fans capture is gathered and deposited in these little cups. The best way to clean this hood is to spray some simple green, run the fan for a little bit and empty the cups. It's really that simple. No mesh, or baffles to fuss with. And since it is less than 8" tall it should fit most standard under cabinet installations that call for a 6"-9" tall hood. MSRP is $849. If you want a more traditional squared off design reminiscent of more commercial hoods you can look at the Hurricane or the Cyclone. Both use the same grease collection system, but they are a little less powerful (695 CFM and 600 CFM respectively - again which is still really good).

Coming in at number two we have the Elica Modena. Elica is an italian company that makes appliances, and their hoods are very well regarded in the Remodeling Industry. The thing I like most about the Modena is the shape. Many folks find themselves in a replacement scenario, wishing they had it in the budget to do something decorative like a chimney style hood but for one reason or another can't do that right now. Enter the Modena, with a classic designer chimney appearance, 9" tall, 600 CFM and microhole baffles that are super quiet, and really good at catching grease. All for MSRP of $969.

And last but not least, for number 3, we have the Vent-A-Hood, a company that's been in the US for nearly 100 years making hoods, they took a break in the 40s to do some metal fabricating for the war effort, but they have a grease capture system called magic lung (that I've covered in detail before) that is specifically designed to keep the grease from getting into the ventilation system. Their headquarters is located in the birthplace of Barney and Friends, the cowboys, and Sandy Cheeks, that's right Dallas, Texas. When I got to go down there November of 2017 (seriously guys it's been too long) they actually simulated a grease fire (it was controlled in a lab don't worry) and showed how no flame got past the grease collector up into the vent. I haven't seen such a test performed with any other hood brand. Their model PRH9-230 SS has a rating of 600 CFM although is equivalent to 900 CFM, is 9" tall and goes for $1,621.

Remember kids these are all great hoods, the ranking is not worst to best, but from lowest to highest price. The important thing is to decide which features (and price) are most important to you, because what do we always say? Say it with me kids. Every product is right for somebody.
