This is my cover of "Time" by Hans Zimmer (from the movie "Inception"). Where do I even start? I guess by saying that not only has this song been a huge source of inspiration to me for many years, but Hans Zimmer himself is a composer I greatly admire and respect.
I feel like I have worn this song out on my playlists because I have listened to the original version so many times - in moments of happiness, sadness, or just in need of inspiration. There is something about the build-up in this song - that by the time you reach the climactic central theme, you feel it vibrate you to the core.
If you know anything about me or my music, you know that I am not a "cover song" artist. I write mostly original music. When I DO choose to cover a song, it is only because it has touched me deeply and I am very picky about what songs I cover. I had been wanting to write an arrangement of "Time" for a while, but knew that if I did this song, I needed to make sure that it was up to a level that if Hans himself heard it, he would be proud. I admit I have been a bit nervous about covering this song - because of it's popularity.
I carefully thought this arrangement through - not wanting to overshadow the soft parts, or be too repetitive in the climactic section. As Hans used the piano as a main part of the original version, I kept it close to what he had from the beginning, but expanded on the theme as it moved along. I wanted the piano to roll with the themes seamlessly as the song grew and grew.
When I was in London recording this album at Abbey Road Studios with the English Session Orchestra, it was a surreal experience to be sitting there in the control room of Studio 2 looking down as the orchestra recorded this piece - knowing that many of Zimmer's pieces had been recorded there before as well. On a lunch break between songs, I was down in the "Canteen" area of the studios getting some food and was introduced to Mary, an extremely talented bassist. I of course instantly knew who she was because I saw her perform live with Hans Zimmer in VIenne, France last summer. She also performed on my co-producer's recent Swedish folklore album and bonded with him a bit, and so it was a pleasure to meet someone who has also worked so closely with Hans.
Hans, if you by chance ever hear this arrangement of your song, please know how much it has meant to me. And THANK YOU, for the incredible music you bring to the world and for inspiring so many of us.
