What makes this song so great is the patriotic and iconic status that this song has in America. God Bless America is often considered one of the top songs that all American children should learn. God Bless America is also a great song for experiencing rhythm and pitch. Not only does God Bless America highlight different areas of America- it also highlights most rhythmic patterns taught in elementary music classes, as well as highlighting both stepwise melodic patterns and melodic leaps. When viewed musically, God Bless America becomes a fascinating review of so many of the musical concepts that students learn throughout the year.
So as we approach memorial day and the end of the school this year, think about God Bless America as a nice patriotic piece to learn, discuss, and review with your students!
