Replacing a former building Emperor Wilhelm II. gave orders to construct this monumental church by the architect Julius Raschdorff between 1893 and 1905. For the emperor, who was showing signs of megalomania, the building was not only to be a chapel of the court, but also the main church of Protestantism in Germany. Additionally, it was to be a place of glorification of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Therefore a memorial hall dedicated to chosen Prussian kings was created as an adjacent room to the North of the main church. Many contemporaries were critical of the Cathedral. It was deemed to be too pompous and its style regarded as old-fashioned. The dynastic representation was criticised for being excessively self-pleased.
