In this video Kevin is going to show you how to use Filmora to edit your videos for Instagram - for both Instagram video and Instagram stories!

These new aspect ratios are available in versions 8.5 and up so if you haven’t updated Filmora, you can here: http://bit.ly/2NAbyYo

Instagram stories use the 9: 16 or Portrait while for video posts, its best to use 1:1 or Square.

Something to keep in mind is Instagram video posts only allow you to post 60 seconds of a video as a post but for stories, you can only post 15 seconds at a time. This might be tricky if you want to post a full video, but there are many different creative ways you can use videos on Instagram.

For example, You can share a preview of a video you recently uploaded on your YouTube channel or website, create a mini slideshow from epic adventures, or even a short video to share with friends.

I’m going to be creating a preview for a drone video we have on our YouTube channel to post on Filmora’s Instagram.

How to Edit Instagram Videos in Filmora

1. Open Filmora, before you start a new project, choose the aspect ratio in the drop down menu.

2. So since Instagram video posts are 60 seconds, trim down this video to be 60 seconds or less.

You might see there are black bars around the video. This is because the original video was edited and exported with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Now you can keep the video as is and export if you want the video preview to have a cinematic bars look OR you can crop the video to be 1:1. Keep in mind, if you crop a video with a different aspect ratio dimension, this may expand or squeeze the video.

To crop the video, just right click the clip and click Crop and Zoom. At the bottom of the window you can crop to 1:1, adjust the crop placement, and click Ok. Now if I play it back, the video has been cropped and there are no black bars.

3. With the aspect ratio set for your Instagram post, now all you need to do is edit like you would any video! You can add filters, overlays, text. Whatever you want to jazz up your video.

4. Export your video and transfer your video from your desktop to your phone. Upload your video to Instagram and you’re done!
