Rare Goethite-Included Quartz: From Mine to Market. Welcome back to our quartz adventure! In this follow-up video, we're diving into the mesmerizing world of goethite-included quartz, straight from the remote mines of Mozambique. It's a journey that takes two days by foot just to reach the source, but oh, the treasures that await!
This time, our miners stumbled upon a fascinating pocket of goethite-included quartz with some with a smoky hue and hinting at the possibility of uncovering amethyst in the near future. Imagine the excitement of receiving four large bags filled with these geological wonders – it felt like Christmas morning!
But with great finds comes great responsibility, and our task was to prepare these beauties for display in our Rockshop at Hartbeespoort. The challenge? They were too large for our usual cleaning setup. That's when innovation kicked in – a 210-liter drum, cut in half, became the perfect vessel for our project.
Equipped with a diamond saw attached to a new grinder, and donned in my trusty yellow wetsuit, I set out to cut each stone with precision, ensuring they had a stable base for presentation. With water to cool the blade, the process was both meticulous and thrilling.
Once all the stones were carefully packed into the drum, we added a mixture of water and oxalic acid and ignited a fire underneath. For two hours, we let the acid solution reach boiling temperature, allowing it to work its magic. Then, a patient overnight wait as it cooled down.
Day two brought the eagerly awaited reveal – unpacking the drum and washing off the acid with a pressure hose. And there they were, gleaming in all their glory – the goethite-included quartz, now ready to captivate customers in our store.
