It can sometimes seem like our past mental conditioning obscures the light of consciousness entirely. Is there something we can do to change these limiting patterns of thinking and correct negative beliefs that don't serve us, or will that simply reinforce the belief in being a separate self?

Rupert says it's one thing to recognise that the conditioning of the ego is impersonal. It's quite another thing to say that there is nothing you can do about it — that's what Neo-Advaita says. I acknowledge that there is nobody who is personally responsible for their personal conditioning — however, I do think that at the relative level there is something to be done. What is there to be done? To explore our experience.

When you say conditioning masks the presence of awareness, you're slipping back into an old habit or belief system. If you believe that, that's how it will seem to be. Just stop believing that. How do you stop believing that? By seeing that it is not true. In other words, it is understanding that enables you to stop believing that your conditioning masks the peace and happiness that are inherent in your own being.
