It’s so hard to believe that the end of the year has come so close. Brother was so adamant and insisted that we should visit our aunty in Nawalapitiya before the end of this year. Amidst the December cold weather, my aunts village in Nawalapitiya gives such a pleasant climate to be enjoyed. The thick fog wrapped in these mountain peaks is an irresistible site through out the day. The top peaks of the Kabaragala mountains always greets the clouds giving such a harmonious beauty to the eyes of the beholder. The climate in our village Dankotuwa is slightly warm and humid. In comparison, Nawalapitiya is a mountainous area that belongs to Sri Lanka’s wet and cold mountain zone. Because of this fact and the cold and the fresh climate, we always jumped at the chance of visiting my Aunt in Nawalapitiya.

As the climate in Nawalapitiya is completely different than our village because of the weather. Even the trees and the vegetation are also different in every way. I was surprised to see most of the trees, vegetation and plants which grows besides river and water ways in our village are also growing in the mountain tops in Nawalapitiya. The main reason for this luscious vegetation growth in this area may be because of the high amount of moisture in the soil. The tender shoots of a such a tree that grows here is called “Karan koku” (Golden leather fern / Acrostichum aureum). A member of the bracken fern (meewana plant), gets a very attractive and beautiful tender fresh shoots from the middle. The locals call it “karan koku” or “Bara Koku" or "Pattara Koku" and has became highly popular for making tasty curries.

Our trip to Nawalapitiya became a very enjoyable and a peaceful one. I dreamt of exploring this beautiful mountain heaven with my brother and my Aunt's daughter, feeling the icy cold rivers and water ways and soaking my feet in the river and to live and experience these blessings in that perfect present moment was a dream that I craved for. It was in one of those trips that made me pick some luscious tender shoots of this highly nutritious herbal plant. On our way home I got into the little stream and thoroughly washed the tender shoots.

To cook this highly nutritious shoots, firstly they should be blanched with hot water and salt, turmeric, and garcinia. Brother had waited impatiently for me to stir fry the Golden leather ferns just like the way I make them at home as we never get such big shoots in our village. Actually I was planning to make a sour curry out of it but he volunteered and together with our cousin sister, he made it his own favourite way, "the Hot Butter way".

Uncle also stepped in right on time to the house as we finished taking lunch. He had bought fresh green grapes just like I requested him in the morning. I mixed mandarin wedges, pomegranate seeds, roasted cashews with green grape halves and added bee honey and fresh ginger extract incorporating them to be well coated. The sun was shining well in the afternoon. But the  cold breeze that blew from the faraway mountain peaks took me to another dreamy fairytale dimension as I sat down and  started to enjoy my sweet and fresh dessert while staring at the Kabaragala mountain range that is clad in thick cloud cover, showing off a rare breathtaking gift of the Mother Nature!

Love you All!
