KNOWING ALLAH: SUFI EPISTEMOLOGY FROM IMAM AL-GHAZALI TO SHAYKH AHMED AL-TIJANI 👤 Dr Zakariya Wright (Qatar) The Islamic gnostic tradition speaks openly about the self-disclosure of God in the polished mirror of the aspirant’s heart. This talk discusses this particular Sufi “way of knowing” in conversation with other epistemologies articulated by Muslim scholars. Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (d. 1111, Khurasan) argued for importance of verification of all knowledge, including the fundamental concept of Islamic monotheism (tawhid) through direct witnessing of the divine presence. Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani (d. 1815, Fez), building a long tradition of Sufi scholarship since al-Ghazali, further developed the notion of the experiential knowledge of God (maʿrifa). ~~~~~ Biography: Zakariya Wright, is associate professor with joint appointments in history and religious studies. Wright received his PhD (history) from Northwestern University, his MA in Arabic studies, Middle East history, from the American University in Cairo, his BA in history from Stanford University. He teaches classes on Islam in Africa, modern Middle East history, African history, Islamic intellectual history and Islam in America. He studied the traditional Islamic sciences with Shaykh Hassan Cisse and Shaykh Tijani Cisse in Senegal. ~~~~~ 🔥 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 Donate from as little as £5pm https://lote.org.uk/donate/ ~~~~~ © Lote Tree Foundation ~~~~~ ♡ 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁... ♡ ▸ https://lote.org.uk/ ▸ http://facebook.com/lotetreefdn ▸ http://twitter.com/lotetreefdn ▸ http://instagram.com/lotetreefdn
