"The Lumbridge guardsmen were added during the Lumbridge rebuildathon, after World Event 1, and the herring-tree message is a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where King Arthur is tasked with chopping down the mightiest tree in the forest by using only a herring, before he is allowed to pass."
