(12 Dec 2020) PRO-CHINA NEWS CHANNEL IN TAIWAN ENDS BROADCASTS
Employees of a leading pro-China TV news station in Taiwan gathered and sang before their channel was taken down from cable TV systems at midnight on Saturday (12 DECEMBER 2020).
The Taiwanese government refused to renew its license, citing accuracy issues.
Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) referred to repeated violations of rules on accurate reporting when rejecting CTiTV's license application.
The station has been fined 25 times in the past six years for allegedly spreading inaccurate information.
CTi TV's channel 52 went off-air on local cable news shortly after midnight on December 12.
Although taken down from cable distribution systems, CTi TV will continue to broadcast on various internet video platforms, such as YouTube.
The station is owned by the Want Want China Times media group, which also publishes one of Taiwan's main newspapers.
It has long been associated with a Beijing-friendly political view, attributed partly to its extensive business interests in China.
It tried unsuccessfully to appeal the license refusal and accused the Taiwanese government of endangering media freedom.
