On September 4, 1981, the Jazz Members Big Band took the stage at the Chicago Jazz Festival in Grant Park, joined by special guests Louie Bellson and Clark Terry. This legendary performance was recorded and broadcast by National Public Radio (NPR) as part of their "Jazz Alive" series, hosted by NPR's Billy Taylor and Ben Sidran. This historic event was made possible thanks to Mark Rabin, who shared it from his collection.

Louie Bellson and Clark Terry are two highly respected jazz drummers and bandleaders.
Louie Bellson was born on July 6, 1924 in Rock Falls, Illinois. He began playing the drums at an early age and quickly developed a passion for jazz music. Throughout his career, Bellson worked with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie. He was known for his virtuosic drumming style, incorporating a wide range of percussion instruments, and was a pioneer in the use of double bass drums.
Clark Terry was born on December 14, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a prolific and versatile jazz musician, playing the trumpet, flugelhorn, and piano. Throughout his career, Terry performed with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Quincy Jones. He was known for his skill as a jazz educator, mentoring many young musicians, and was also an important figure in the development of the flugelhorn as a jazz instrument.
Together, Louie Bellson and Clark Terry formed a musical partnership that was highly regarded in the jazz community. Their performances showcased the incredible skills of both musicians, and their camaraderie and mutual respect were evident on stage.
