Prolonged positioning on the back in patients with poor mobility can increase risk of pressure ulcers due to the bony prominence on the sacrum (the bone below the base of the spine). This must be avoided, with the patient being encouraged or assisted to tilt from side to side (at least 4 hourly, or more frequently if the skin is vulnerable or starting to mark).
Worried about waking a patient up at night? The patient can be tilted very gently 30 degrees by rolling slightly and placing a pillow in the side with minimal disturbance.

Don't forget about offloading the patient's heels and ensuring that he or she has a suitable mattress.
