After days of lengthy debate, an effort to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs in Alabama state institutions has succeeded. The new Alabama law banning diversity, equity and inclusion offices, programming and training in public colleges and other state agencies will go into effect this fall.

The bill, SB129, authored by Sen. Will Barfoot, R-Pike Road, asked for sweeping changes or cancellations to state agencies and public colleges that fund DEI offices and programming.

On March 20, Governor Kay Ivey signed SB129, known as the “divisive concepts” bill, into law. The law will become effective on October 1, 2024.
