Dead Drones After Mating Flights (Queen Bee Mated)

A virgin queen is ready for mating flights 5-7 days after emerging (weather permitting). On these flights she will mate with 10-20 drones. After the drone mates he dies.
In this video, I came across a nuc that had a pile of drones outside the entrance. Some were dead, some alive. After a closer look at the dead bees I noticed their end-trails were hanging out. Drones do not have stingers so this could only mean these drones followed the queen home. Or maybe the queen didn't go far to mate due to passing rain just an hour before hand. What's your thoughts?
