Sri Lanka has got its
Sri Lanka has got its first Leftist President in 55-year-old Anura Kumara Dissanayake, popularly known as A.K.D. A man of humble origins, he studied at a Government-funded school, sold toffee and cigarettes on trains, got a degree in physics and worked as a tuition teacher before becoming a lawmaker in 2000 and the leader of the J.V.P. in 2014. He is the first political Sri Lankan leader who does not belong to the political elite or a political family or dynasty. Many see his win as a breath of fresh air in Sri Lankan politics after years of political and economic crises. He called a snap parliamentary election on 14 November in a bid to increase the strength of his party in parliament. Without a parliamentary majority he can neither pass a budget nor appoint a full Cabinet. Can he deliver? Will Dissanayake be able to balance ideological compulsions, domestic reforms and the pulls and pressures of geopolitics?
