Gerunds | Participles | Infinitives. Verbals. Non verbs. Tips on how to identify and use them.

In this rare video, the demons of English grammar, the verbals,  namely the  gerund, participle, and infinitive are explained with  patient, clear, step by step instruction. People across time have been flummoxed by the confusions created in identifying these items and understanding their function in the sentence.

They are not merely labels to be learnt. Not knowing them, can become a hurdle in understanding advanced grammar in later years. Middle and high school students experience great difficulty in understanding simple, compound and complex sentences for transformation when these verbals are not thoroughly understood.

Please Note: There is an error in the last sentence in this video. In the sentence, 'Trolling on the internet was Mohan's fascinating obsession....' the word 'trolling' is not a participle (as stated) but a gerund, because it answers the question 'what?' put to the verb 'was'.  The whole phrase can be substituted with the word 'something'. Something was Mohan's obsession. What was Mohan's fascinating obsession? trolling...... We cannot use the 'who was' rule here. Had the sentence been: 'Mohan, trolling on the internet, was arrested', then trolling would be a participle. Mohan who was trolling on the internet was arrested would be the expanded adjectival clause. Mea culpa. Please accept apologies and this correction.

Learn how to work on your grammar skills by daily effortless practice that requires very little time. Usha Pandit's revolutionary grammar approach is a part of learning grammar in several schools who have acknowledged that traditional grammar learning confuses more than it clarifies. The series of 7 books is called 'Language with Ease'. It merges grammar with vocabulary building, writing and oral practice skills.

Usha in her role as teacher trainer, textbook writer, and pedagogy coach has devised excellent short cuts to making teaching and learning simple and easy. Her methods are  used widely by teachers across India.

Grammar is important in order to analyse sentence structures, which in turn will give you confidence to write by using a variety of complex constructions, although learning grammar in itself will neither make you speak or write fluently, without due mindfulness. Beginning sentences with gerunds and participles create sophistication in language. Knowing how this happens, is grammar's contribution to better language.

Follow all our grammar videos, and you will find that the layering of tips and commonalities are presented across the items. This will help you in consolidating the strategies permanently as checks to improve your understanding.
