I've been using the Countertek for years, so I'm excited to give it an official review and put it through it's paces. The Countertek is an RF detector that can be incredible precise and accurate, it also has a few different modes that make it useful in many different situations. Lets see all that it comes with. In the box, you have the Countertek itself, a single headphone, and a charger. The countertek has a built in rechargeable battery.
So, lets first go over the device and how to use it and then I'll actually show you how to properly do a sweep with an RF detector and give and example of what to look for.
Now that we're familiar with how to use the device lets get into some more advanced tips.
The first thing I'm going to suggest is to turn off any known device that transmits wirelessly, this could be things like your Cell Phone, Wireless Router, Smart TV's, Laptops and even if you have like a Google Home or Alexa, basically anything you can think of that connects to your WiFi. The reason being is that you will pick up these signals when you're doing your sweep and they could lead you on a witch hunt that lead to nothing but a harmless, normal signal.
Before you start you will want to calibrate the device, to do that adjust the sensitivity down until you are just outside the range of detecting a wireless signal. This next part is very important, you will want to re-calibrate the device every time you change walls.
Now that we are calibrated and all known wireless devices are off you are ready to start your sweep. The pattern I recommend is the S pattern, start high on your left and continue down the wall in a sweeping motion.
Alright, now lets go to the sales floor and see what this actually looks like.
With a wide frequency detection range and ease of use design the Countertek Ultra Pro should definitely be on your wish list. One of the only disadvantages that I can think of for the Countertek is the fact that it doesn't tell you what type of signal it's detecting like some of the other more expensive units do. But, with that being said, unless you're a PI or in a dire situation that isn't the biggest deal.
