STORYLINE:
South Korean military on Thursday directly contradicted North Korea's announcement on the successful multi-warhead missile and claimed it was false.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff had said Wednesday it suspected the weapon launched by North Korea was a solid-fueled hypersonic missile.

It said the missile blew up off the North’s east coast, scattering fragments in the water. It said it detected more smoke than normal launches, suggesting a possible combustion issue caused by an engine fault.

Earlier on Thursday, however, North Korea's state news agency said it had successfully tested a multiwarhead missile, a sophisticated weapon coveted by leader Kim Jong Un to overwhelm missile defenses in the continental United States.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson, Lee Sung Joon, emphasized during Thursday's regular briefing that the missile exploded in the early stage of its flight. "We think it aims to deceive and exaggerate," said Lee.

Lee also responded to North Korea's trash balloons provocation, saying that the military did not plan to turn on the loudspeakers on Thursday, saying it has not broadcast anti-North Korea propaganda to give North Korea some time to reflect on its action.

"If North Korea continues to send trash balloons, we will have to resume the loudspeaker broadcasts," said Lee.

North Korea has launched about 180 balloons from Wednesday to Thursday.
