In this video I show how Vincent van Gogh made his colours glow using the principles of optical mixing. I look at the colour theory and science behind optical mixing, and explain how it affects our eyes. Throughout I show how Vincent made brilliant use of these ideas in his paintings such as Cornfield with Cypresses and the dual portrait of a postman and his wife. We'll also see how the work of the great scientists James Clerk Maxwell was key to van Gogh's understanding.

'Cornfield with Cypresses' is on display in the National Gallery, London, UK. The 'Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin' and 'La Berceuse (Augustine Roulin)' are in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands.

This video is part of a short series I have made to help you steal from Vincent - arguably the greatest colourist that has ever lived. Don't forget to subscribe to see more from Great Artists Steal!
