A site survey. Filmed at The Rollright Stones near Long Compton village on the border of Oxfordshire/Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom. The Rollright Stones, an ancient Neolithic complex lies very close to Long Compton village - scene of a famous Witch Murder.

On the 15th September 1875 AD, an old local woman called Anne Tennant left her home to buy a loaf of bread, and upon her return to her family was met by a local man called James Hayward upon the road. Without warning he launched a murderous assault upon Anne Tennant with his pitchfork. He stabbed her body and head several times, this was between 7 - 8 pm. A local farmer by the name of John Taylor saw the assault and rushed to help Anne, disarming James Hayward and subduing him. A crowd quickly gathered including the daughter of Anne, Elizabeth Hughes. Despite his brave action, John Taylor could not stop the attack in time and Anne Tennant died 3 days later of her wounds.

James Hayward was arrested and put on trial for murder. James Hayward was not only mentally unstable but also a fundamentalist christian. He had long claimed the entire area was rife with Witches (not an untrue statement given the closeness of The Rollright Stones) and had previously stated in public that he would like to murder between 15 - 17 local people, men and woman, whom he believed to be Witches.

That being said there is no evidence to suggest Anne Tennant was a practising Witch.

James Hayward was found guilty but due to his mental state was not hanged for the crime - he was sentenced to life imprisonment in a mental asylum. He died in Broadmoor mental asylum 15 years later on 23rd June 1890 AD.

Historians often link this Witchcraft Murder to a later Witchcraft Murder which occurred on Meon Hill (a known site for Witchcraft). On 14th February 1945 AD - a local man named Charles Walton, from Lower Quinton village, was brutally murdered with a pitchfork. His corpse being found with the pitchfork rammed through his neck into the ground. Unlike the Witchcraft murder of Anne Tennant, the murderer of Charles Walton was never found.

South Warwickshire is the epicentre of Witchcraft in all of the United Kingdom - the fact that Meon Hill and The Rollright Stones are located there only add to this fact.

So remember Anne Tennant and Charles Walton as two innocent victims of crime. Neither were Witches but both were murdered in the belief they were. South Warwickshire remains steeped in Witchcraft legends - even in the 21st Century.
