Because of the possible complications associated with fetal tumors, it is important for babies to deliver in a center prepared to provide immediate expert care to the newborn. At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, delivery of babies with prenatally diagnosed teratomas occurs in CHOP’s Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit, the world’s first birthing center within a pediatric hospital specifically dedicated to healthy mothers carrying babies with serious and life-threatening birth defects. Operating rooms and expert pediatric surgeons are in the same location as the delivery rooms, allowing for immediate expert care your baby may need.

Drs. N. Scott Adzick, Alan Flake and Mark Johnson from the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia explain the different options for delivering a baby with a teratoma, including a cesarean delivery or an EXIT procedure.

The type of delivery recommended will depend on the size and type of the teratoma. For babies with sacrococcygeal teratoma, a planned cesarean delivery is recommended. Babies with cervical or mediastinal teratomas that are blocking the airway may be delivered using an EXIT procedure. During an EXIT procedure, the baby is partially delivered while still connected to the placenta until an airway is established.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s multidisciplinary team of maternal-fetal medicine specialists, fetal surgeons, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, airway experts, advanced practice nurses, and many other specialists work together to provide the best possible care for both mother and baby.
