On the eve of’ Mrs Thatcher’s visit to Moscow, 'THIS WEEK' reports from the Soviet Union on the extraordinary changes that Mr Gorbachev is trying to create in this vast country.
Mikhail Gorbachev’s Second Revolution involves so called ‘glasnost’...opening up the closed world of Communism to more criticism and more democracy. In her visit to the Soviet Union Margaret Jay talked to factory workers, to party officials, to housewives, to villagers on a remote collective farm and to the Jewish dissident, Josif Begun, who was recently released. All of these people felt free to discuss the profound changes taking place in Russia; most were hopeful that life there would be permanently different and better.
