In this lecture, we formulate finite element equations for a beam element and solve problems related to the same. A beam is a long slender structural member generally subjected to transverse loading that produces significant bending as opposed to twisting and axial effects. The bending deformation is measured as a transverse displacement and rotation i.e. two degrees of freedom per node. In deriving the finite element equations for the beam element, we assume that (1) the loading is applied transversely only (i.e. no axial load), (2)Deflections of the beam are small in comparison to the characteristic dimensions of the beam, (3) the material of the beam is linearly elastic, isotropic and homogeneous and (4)the beam is prismatic and the cross-section has an axis of symmetry in the plane of bending.
