This short tutorial video demonstrates how to build a waterfall chart in Excel. Waterfall charts, otherwise known as "bridge charts", illustrate upward and downward movements in a cumulative balance over a given time period. Excel does not provide templates to create waterfall charts "out of the box" but they can easily be created by manipulating input data and using a stacked column chart. Broadly, the steps for constructing a waterfall chart are as follows: 1) Start with the dates and the input data. The dates will form the first column of the chart data. The input data should not be directly included in the chart data. 2) Separate negative values (decreases) and positive values (increases) into two columns: one for decreases and one for increases. Decreases form the second column and increases form the third column of the chart data. 3) Convert negative numbers to positive numbers by adding another negative ("negative negatives"). 4) Calculate the opening balance for each row by adding the previous row's opening balance to any increase in the previous row, then subtracting any decreases in the current row. 5) Create a stacked column chart using the four columns as inputs: dates, opening balances, decreases, and increases. 6) Edit the bar area colours to suit personal preference. Ensure that the areas representing opening balances are coloured with "no fill" so that they appear invisible. ~-~~-~~~-~~-~ Consider watiching: "CONSTRUCT A CASHFLOW STATEMENT" to develop a deeper understanding of how financial statements can be used to calculate cash movements.    • How to Construct a Cash Flow Statemen...   ~-~~-~~~-~~-~
