What a day of Test Cricket we have had! It was an astounding day 23 wickets fell today and 270 runs scored today. At the end of the first session it looked like it will an easy win for the Indians this Test match who would have thought that things would change dramatically in the final session? 1st Session: 55 Runs 23.2 Overs 10 Wickets.
Let's have a quick recap of the Day 1. South Africa won toss and opted to bat but their morning session turned into a nightmare. Mohammed Siraj delivered an outstanding bowling performance ripping through the South African batting line-up. He claimed six wickets in a single spell restricting them to a mere 55 runs in 23.2 overs.
The Proteas struggled to build any substantial partnerships and only Bedingham and Verreynne managed to breach the double-figure mark. In India's innings KG Rabada struck early by removing Jaiswal for a duck. However Rohit Sharma and Gill provided stability with a solid 55-run partnership for the second wicket.
Nandre Burger though staged a comeback with a fiery spell dismissing key batsmen. Rohit fell for 39 and Burger's aggressive bowling claimed Gill and Iyer in quick succession. Virat Kohli battled against Burger's aggression ending the session unbeaten at 20 with India at 110/4. 2nd Session: 111 Runs 24 Overs 4 Wickets.
The last session saw South Africa dominating as India collapsed from 153-4 to 153-10. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli's partnership of 43 runs for the 5th wicket was disrupted by Ngidi's impressive three wickets in the 34th over. Kagiso Rabada added to the misery taking two wickets in the 35th and a run-out of Siraj ensued.
Virat Kohli top-scored with 46 runs with Rohit Sharma contributing 39 and Shubman Gill 36. South Africa's opener Dean Elgar in his final Test innings partnered with Markram. The duo put together a steady 37-run partnership. Mukesh Kumar consistently bowling on good lines and lengths dismissed Elgar for 12 runs.
Mukesh struck again claiming the wicket of De Zorzi (1) while Bumrah dismissed Stubbs in the 16th over. South Africa have scored 62 runs and have lost 3 wickets at the end of the Day 1. South Africa trails by 36 runs at the moment. The day ended with South Africa in a commanding position setting the stage for an intriguing continuation.
An absolutely ridiculous day of Test cricket comes to an end. 23 wickets fell in total after South Africa won the toss and opted to bat. We had a six-fer from Siraj in a 9-over spell that blew the hosts away to their lowest total since readmission. We then had India losing their last six wickets for 0 runs going from 153/4 to 153 all out.
And now South Africa are already three down in their second innings while they still trail by 36. Just bonkers cricket on a bonkers pitch where the ball is consistently rearing up off a good length especially from the Wynberg end. Not just that the odd ball is also shooting low. Good luck being a batter out there.
Anyway India are well ahead in the game at the moment and it's a great chance for them to finish level in the series. South Africa have to bat out of their skins tomorrow to even take it into Day 3. And that concludes an enthralling Day 1 of the Test Match between South Africa and India. 3rd Session: 104 Runs 27.5 Overs 9 Wickets.
