(15 Aug 2019) Hundreds of Sikh protestors marched through the streets of New York on Thursday, calling for the the United Nations to help them create a independent state within India for the Sikh people.
The protestors called for the creation of a new country named Khalistan to be created in the Punjab regions of India and Pakistan.
Punjab is the historic homeland of the Sikh people.
The protest called for a plebiscite not only in Punjab, but also in Kashmir.
"the UN should intervene and their should be a plebiscite in Indian occupied Kashmir as well as Indian occupied Punjab because we the, the people of Punjab and the people of Kashmir are the indigenous people of those two states and we have a right to self determination, which is being snatched by the Hindu nationalist Modi government," said Gurpatwant Pannun, one of the protests organizers.
Thursday is Indian independence day.
