Experts realize that many serial killers fantasize about their "perfect victim" long before the murder takes place. This is a trait only organized serial killers possess - they stalk and hunt their prey, searching for this perfect victim to fuel their own sadistic fantasies.
The race, gender, age, physical characteristics, and sometimes even the profession of the fantasy victim are deeply internalized in the serial killer's mind. So much so, they might not even realize they have a particular "type" until after the murders and an investigator or psychiatrist will point out "all your victims fit a certain pattern."
